Credit: Getty Images If you're thinking about welcoming a new scaly-skinned addition to your home, allow us to introduce you to the best types of reptiles you can keep as a pet. These air-breathing vertebrates include a wide range of species. From the much-loved lizards and snakes to the hard-shelled turtles and tortoises who can live for decades (and some, centuries). Unlike cats or dogs, reptiles don't carry dander. This means they're typically hypoallergenic, making them ideal for allergy sufferers. rabbs tree frog :: Article Creator What We Lose When Animals Go Extinct This story appears in the October 2019 issue of National Geographic magazine. LIFE, BESIEGED Most of the animals shown here are among the more than 28,000 species of animals and plants that the International Union for Conservation of Nature says are threatened with extinction. That number actually understates the risk. Since 1964, when the IUCN established a "red list" of threatened species and began compiling data gathered worldwide, the list has become the preeminent global database of endangered life and an essential tool for conservation policy. Yet the IUCN has been able to assess only about 106,000 species of the more than 1.5 million species of animals and more than 300,000 plants that scientists have described and named—which they estimate is less than a quarter of what's really out there. A recent intergovernmental report on the biodiversity crisis est...

bullmastiff puppies for sale :: Article Creator Most Puppies In California's Underground Market Come From The Midwest — Some From Puppy Mills Published September 27, 2024 at 11:01 AM CDT Listen • 4:45 A recent Los Angeles Times investigation found, since 2019, more than 70% of dogs going into California came from the Midwest — Iowa being one of the top states exporting puppies. Investigative reporters Melody Gutierrez and Alene Tchekmedyian spent more than a year digging into records tracing pure bred puppies imported to California. They found an unregulated puppy pipeline involving loopholes, consumer fraud and mass breeding facilities with owners citied for horrific living conditions. Excited new puppy owners were told their expensive pup was locally bred, but sometimes ended up with a sick or even dead puppy. IPR Morning Edition Host Meghan McKinney spoke with Guterriez and Tchekmedyian about their findings: a large-scale I...

harlequin tree frog :: Article Creator Tree Frog Tadpoles Have A Unique Way Of Not Contaminating Their Water Supply: Not Pooping The Eiffinger's tree frog (Kurixalus eiffingeri), found on Ishigaki and Iriomote islands in Japan, has a unique biological adaptation: its tadpoles do not defecate during their early developmental stages. This finding by researchers at Nagoya University in Japan contributes to our understanding of how these small frogs survive in the tiny bodies of water where they spawn. The findings were published in the journal Ecology. Eiffinger's tree frogs rear their young in small, isolated water bodies, such as tree hollows and bamboo stumps, which provide a safe environment with few predators. However, in these limited water spaces, the tadpoles face the challenge of waste management. Unlike other species that excrete toxic ammonia in their feces into larger water bodies where it is diluted and rendered harmless, t...
