zoo med tortoise house :: Article Creator Giant Tortoise Shell To Find Home In Zoo's Natural History Museum Hyderabad: Chanakya, the 125-year-old Giant Galapagos tortoise which breathed its last in the city Nehru Zoological Park, will be remembered by the zoo with authorities deciding to keep on display its carapace in the zoo's natural history museum. The tortoise died on March 16. Chanakya's carapace – the hard outer shell – will be cleaned and placed on display at the museum, zoo curator Dr Sunil S. Hiremath has said. The rest of the remains of the zoo's longest inhabitant, were incinerated after the post-mortem that showed that the animal had died of natural causes resulting from multiple organ failure. The tortoise's shell had not only weathered a span of three centuries during Chanakya's life time, but also shenanigans in 2015 by a 24-year-old man, Fazal Shaik, who jumped into its enclosure, climbed on the...

red drum fish :: Article Creator Red Drum Tourney Underway; Bay Reports Received State Zip Code Country Red Drum Tourney Saturday; Redfish Reports Come In State Zip Code Country Taking It Slow At Goose Island State Park You might think you know what to expect at a Texas beach park: fresh salt air, the languid sound of water lapping on the shore, and a pretty sunset. Goose Island State Park, just north of Rockport along the St. Charles and Aransas Bays, has all that—and it's also a master class in the Gulf Coast's ecological diversity. Somehow the petite park encompasses live oak and red bay woodlands, pockets of coastal prairie, tidal flats, salt marshes, and grasslands in a compact 321 acres. This varied landscape is a big part of why Goose Island is one of the best spots in the region for fishing and birding, with speckled trout, red drum, flounder, and more than three hundred avian species. The park is also home to the Big...

Martha's Vineyard News | Look Sharp - The Vineyard Gazette - Martha's Vineyard News

- September 01, 2021

Looking sharp is the perfect compliment for an Atlantic needlefish. Needlefish, notable for a long, needle-like jaw, are making a splash in Sengekontacket Pond. Last week, Felix Neck's Fern and Feather campers and counselors found five of these sword-like swimmers.    Both predators and prey, needlefish are well known to anglers because they are hunted by striped bass and bluefish as they migrate up the coast.  Using look-alike lures is a sometimes successful ploy that anglers use to catch those desired gamefish.   Our local needlefish species, Strongylura marina, can reach up to two feet long, though the ones that we are seeing in the pond are juvenile fish only a few inches long. Swimming on the water's surface, these fish may seem almost invisible, because of their coloration and shine, which help them blend into the sun-sparkled water. They have platelets in their scales that actually refle...

New chameleon species may be world’s smallest reptile - National Geographic

- November 07, 2021

Scientists have discovered a tiny new species of chameleon in a patch of rainforest in northern Madagascar. This so-called nano-chameleon is about the size of a sunflower seed, fits on the tip of a finger, and may be the smallest reptile on Earth. Officially known as Brookesia nana , or B. nana for short, the new species is so tiny it's thought to survive on a diet of mites and springtails, which it hunts down in leaf litter. "At the first glance, we realized that it was an important discovery," says Andolalao Rakotoarison, a Malagasy herpetologist and coauthor of the new study published in Nature . Finding such a small reptile raises interesting questions about the lower limits of body size in vertebrates. It also highlights the astonishing—and highly threatened—biodiversity of Madagascar. Scientists suspect the chameleon will soon be listed as critically endangered. Lurking in grass Like other chameleons, this tiny reptile possesses a projectile tongue which it uses to...

Dermal disruption: Amphibian skin bacteria is more diverse in cold, variable environments: Global survey of frog skin bacteria reveals microbiome rules of thumb - Science Daily

- February 22, 2019

Amphibians are victims of lethal skin-disease epidemics. In the first global-scale study, researchers from 31 universities and research centers, including the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), collected skin bacteria from more than 2,300 healthy frogs and salamanders from 12 countries to describe microbes on a wide range of host animals to improve knowledge of the distribution of frog-skin bacteria, known to be important in maintaining amphibian health. Based on samples of 205 different species of amphibians, the team concluded that an animal's environment, especially the temperature, plays a big role in which bacteria live on its skin. Their most striking result, published in Nature Ecology and Evolution , was that amphibian skin microbes are more diverse in areas with cold winters and variable temperatures. This was unexpected because most animals and plants are more diverse in the tropics. "Finding higher overall diversity of these skin bacteria in temperat...

Building the ARC: Zoo Knoxville begins final push to fund new Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Campus - WBIR.com

- November 08, 2019

Zoo Knoxville announced Friday it's beginning the final push to fund its new Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Campus after raising $36.5 million from across the area as part of its Dream Wilder campaign. The zoo is asking for the public's help to raise the remaining $2.5 million needed to fund the ARC project -- an exciting new state-of-the-art conservation campus that will add a new crown jewel attraction to the zoo. The 2.5-acre campus will include a 12,000-square foot reptile facility named the 'FirstBank ARC Center' -- which is being likened to a modern day 'ark' to save critically endangered reptiles and amphibians from extinction. Zoo Knoxville broke ground Wednesday on its new amphibian and reptile campus. The Zoo also received a sizable $5 million joint donation from Jim Clayton and FirstBank -- a gift that will support this major project in the zoo's Dream Wilder capital campaign. The center will bring new species to the zoo such a...
