zoo med tortoise house :: Article Creator Giant Tortoise Shell To Find Home In Zoo's Natural History Museum Hyderabad: Chanakya, the 125-year-old Giant Galapagos tortoise which breathed its last in the city Nehru Zoological Park, will be remembered by the zoo with authorities deciding to keep on display its carapace in the zoo's natural history museum. The tortoise died on March 16. Chanakya's carapace – the hard outer shell – will be cleaned and placed on display at the museum, zoo curator Dr Sunil S. Hiremath has said. The rest of the remains of the zoo's longest inhabitant, were incinerated after the post-mortem that showed that the animal had died of natural causes resulting from multiple organ failure. The tortoise's shell had not only weathered a span of three centuries during Chanakya's life time, but also shenanigans in 2015 by a 24-year-old man, Fazal Shaik, who jumped into its enclosure, climbed on the...

Meet the colour-changing, herbivorous spiny-tailed lizard - Down To Earth Magazine

- January 16, 2023

A Rajasthan sanctuary recently received a protective cover against a proposed move by the State government to reduce the size of its eco-sensitive zone, according to daily The Hindu. The Tal Chhapar sanctuary has large colonies of the herbivorous spiny-tailed lizard. Photo: Vikas Choudhary/CSE The Rajasthan High Court intervened through a suo motu public interest litigation to protect the sanctuary, noting many exotic species had been destroyed or relocated from it. Indian spiny-tailed lizard plays a significant ecological function by serving as prey to foxes, raptors, crows and snakes that share its ecosystem. Photo: Vikas Choudhary/CSE ...

Martha's Vineyard News | Look Sharp - The Vineyard Gazette - Martha's Vineyard News

- September 01, 2021

Looking sharp is the perfect compliment for an Atlantic needlefish. Needlefish, notable for a long, needle-like jaw, are making a splash in Sengekontacket Pond. Last week, Felix Neck's Fern and Feather campers and counselors found five of these sword-like swimmers.    Both predators and prey, needlefish are well known to anglers because they are hunted by striped bass and bluefish as they migrate up the coast.  Using look-alike lures is a sometimes successful ploy that anglers use to catch those desired gamefish.   Our local needlefish species, Strongylura marina, can reach up to two feet long, though the ones that we are seeing in the pond are juvenile fish only a few inches long. Swimming on the water's surface, these fish may seem almost invisible, because of their coloration and shine, which help them blend into the sun-sparkled water. They have platelets in their scales that actually refle...

Flattened frogs, toads and salamanders: Love and death on Pennsylvania roadways - PennLive.com

- March 21, 2019

On warm, rainy, spring evenings, rangers close River Road in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in northeastern Pennsylvania from about 4 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. the next morning to protect migrating amphibians from squishy deaths under the tires of motor vehicles. Hordes of frogs, toads and salamanders are crawling and hopping to breeding pools in their annual rite of spring. Some will travel just a few hundred feet. Others might cover more than a quarter-mile. All of them are focused on finding a mate and leaving behind gelatinous masses of eggs that, if conditions are favorable, will hatch into new generations of their species before the temporary pools dry up and disappear. Elsewhere in the recreation area, outside of the protected passage over River Road, and across Pennsylvania and other northeastern states, countless other amphibians are making the same overland dash, and huge numbers are losing the race on roadways. Several years ago, staffers at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary...

texas spiny lizard :: Article Creator Texas Spiny Lizards Do Push-Ups To Assert Power If you've ever seen a lizard doing tiny push-ups on a fence or rock, you might think it's just being weird or maybe training for a lizard Olympics. But believe it or not, those push-ups actually mean something very serious in the lizard world. In Texas, there's a kind of lizard called the Texas Spiny Lizard. It has rough, scaly skin and blends in well with trees and fences. The males do something pretty cool to show off: they do fast, strong push-ups. But they're not trying to get stronger. They're trying to prove they're the boss. Texas Lizards Flex Muscles with Push-Ups These lizards live in the wild, where space is important. The males need their own territory, a place with food, safety, and a good spot to impress females. But other male lizards want the same thing. That's where the push-ups come in. When two males meet, they...

Giant lizards, hissing ducks, and pythons: Florida has an invasive species problem - National Geographic

THE EVERGLADES, FLORIDA Gillian Hicks and her boyfriend, Michael Litersky, were sitting on the porch of Hicks's apartment in Lake Worth Beach, Florida, when they noticed a strange animal slinking along the fence. It looked a bit like a raccoon, but its color was too mustardy, and a bit like a cat, but its tail flexed and gripped with remarkable dexterity. A Google search suggested the mysterious beast might be some type of primate, maybe a lemur. Whatever it was, it was cute—with the big, imploring eyes and rounded ears of a teddy bear—and seemed friendly. The internet says lemurs eat fruit, so Litersky set out some watermelon. As the sun dipped into the Gulf of Mexico on that muggy summer evening in 2019, the couple watched the maybe-a-lemur grasp the melon chunks in its clawed forepaws and nibble away at them. The next morning, Hicks awoke to screams. Sprinting out of bed, she discovered Litersky and the little animal doing battle in the kitchen. As Hicks would later explain ...

Aww, the world's most relatable amphibian!': Netizens relate to a frog that cannot jump - The Indian Express

- October 30, 2022

A frog that cannot jump has caught the attention of internet users and many are asking why. When threatened, the frog tries to jump but falls miserably on its back or belly. A CNN video showed the frog struggling hard to jump, land higher but failing miserably. While the frog known as pumpkin toadlet has been mocked online, zoologist Rick Essner said the frogs "jump rarely". "One of the species I worked on was not much bigger than a housefly," he said. On whether they get hurt in the process, he told CNN , "That's really small, so, generally, small things don't break bones. And most seem to have extra bony plates protecting their heads." Watch the video here: This frog can't jump — and the internet's reaction is ribbeting 🐸 pic.twitter.com/sKQvzmajpk — NowThis (@nowthisnews) October 27, 2022 The clip shared by Now This News on Twitter has amassed more than 60,000 views on Twitter. Frogs Can't Vomit, So They Eject Their Entire Stomachs - HowStuffWorks

- January 15, 2019

That potato salad sitting out in the heat too long is a recipe for food poisoning. Fortunately, you can get rid of the bad microbes you consume by vomiting . No so for frogs . If a frog eats something toxic, it can't eject its stomach contents. Instead, the frog throws up its entire stomach . This is called full gastric eversion, and it's a little like dumping out your pockets. A tidy creature, the frog wipes the stomach hanging out of its mouth with its front feet to remove any stray bits. Then it packs the whole thing back into its body, where it will presumably stay until the next noxious tidbit is eaten. [embedded content] People feel nausea before they throw up, probably, so they learn to avoid whatever made them sick. Of course, there's no way to know if a frog feels a little green before it turns its tummy inside out. Frogs aren't the only animals that can't vomit. Others include horses, rabbits and rats – one reason rat poison is so effective. And some...
