More than the Movies: Check out our new mural - The Abington Journal

Have you seen the new mural on the back wall of the Dietrich Theater, the mural that can even be seen from the Route 6 bypass?
In two days, mural artist Bob Lizza brought the Tunkhannock Viaduct to Tunkhannock. The installation took two days but the planning, imagining and creation of it took years. You do not need to go to Nicholson to be wowed by this engineering miracle of the Tunkhannock Viaduct or Nicholson Bridge.
Bob has installed the first of two murals depicting this wonder of Wyoming County. The second mural to be installed next year will complete the image, inspired by a 1937 postcard. The method he used is “trompe l’oeil” or painting an illusion so realistic that you feel you can walk right through it. The third panel, also planned to depict Wyoming County history, will be installed on the Bridge Street side of the building.
This project has been six years in the planning and it is made possible by a community committee and funding from the Endless Mountains Heritage Region with funding from DCNR, the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau and the Wyoming County Room Tax Fund.
One hundred thirty excited children and adults gathered to learn about Reptiles and Amphibians of NEPA, presented by Rick Koval, WNEP Pennsylvania Outdoor Life personality. Did you know there are 48 species of reptiles and amphibians in Pennsylvania? Twenty-four amphibians and 24 reptiles. Along with Rick came two frogs, two snakes, one salamander and one turtle named Shelly.
“I was so impressed by the knowledge of the kids who attended the presentation. During the Q and A they demonstrated that, not only do they have a great interest in the subject, but our children have also learned so much about them,” observed Erica Rogler, Dietrich Theater executive director. “We are so fortunate to have Rick Koval return each year to spark this interest and knowledge. And we are so grateful to the Overlook Estate Foundation for sponsoring this popular program.”
