Capital District Reptile Expo set for Sept. 25 - The Saratogian
ALBANY, N.Y. — The Capital District Reptile Expo is returning this weekend, featuring reptiles, amphibians and other exotic animals.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Albany Capital Center, located at 55 Eagle St.
Now in its fourth year of operation, the expo is held each spring and fall and continually draws a growing crowd of more than 4,000 people to the Capital Region to learn about and purchase exotic pets and related supplies.
Sunday's event will occupy the entire Albany Capital Center with 84,000 square feet of over 160 vendors tables selling exotic pets and feeders as well as enclosures and care items for these animals.
The largest selection of animals and supplies in the expo's history will be presented with hundreds of different species of reptiles, amphibians, aquatics, small exotic mammals, and invertebrates (primarily arachnids, insects, and crustaceans) available for purchase.
The event's signature Education Room is also back again offering hands-on learning opportunities with zoologists, veterinarians and other professional educators. Speakers will give presentations on various topics throughout the day as well.
Expo hosts Frank Townsend and Chris Stokna are passionate about the animals at the event.
"We have a vision for our show of promoting the exotic pet trade here in the Capital Region in a way that encourages education and proper husbandry and does not endorse the unethical capture of wild animals to offer them for sale in the pet trade," they said in a press release. "To support that goal, we have renewed our partnership with 1% For The Planet and the U.S. Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK) to donate a portion of our profits to wildlife conservation focusing on habitat preservation, protecting endangered species, and stopping wildlife crime."
Townsend and Stokna carefully select vendors that have an excellent reputation for care and responsible breeding for their animals in alignment with their vision. They have a strict policy for vendors to sell only captive-bred animals or long-term captive and health-checked animals for those species not yet well established with captive breeding programs in the pet trade.
In addition, attendees are encouraged to research pet needs in advance of the expo and have discussions with the breeders, educators and veterinarians at the event before making an informed purchase decision.
General admission tickets to the Capital District Reptile Expo are available for presale now online at capitaldistrictreptileexpo.com at $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 13. Admission for children five and younger is free.
New for this event, organizers are offering a limited number of VIP tickets, which will allow attendees to enter one hour before general admission to avoid the crowd and have priority shopping access. VIP tickets are available for $25 for adults and $15 for children.
General admission tickets will be available for purchase at the door via cash or credit, but preordering is highly recommended for access to the expo's express no-contact check-in process. Military, police and first responders are offered a 10% discount on their ticket as a thank you for their service, at the door only.
