Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty After Dog Found Alive In Plastic Storage Crate
A woman in Florida has been charged after her landlord's cleaning crew found a dog barely alive in a plastic bin inside of a bathtub when she was being evicted.
The case started in March 2024 when Dr. Anita Damodaran's landlord hired three people to clean the apartment she had vacated. The cleaners said they found the dog, named Betty, inside the plastic bin. The dog's hair was matted and she was extremely malnourished, officials with the Hinsdale Humane Society near Chicago said. The animal rescue said Betty was only able to breathe through a small hole in the bin's lid, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
The cleaners took the dog to an animal hospital for treatment.
"She had impact sores all over, urine burns, her fur was extremely matted, and she was probably surviving on her own feces," John Garrido, from the Stray Rescue Foundation, told WFLD.
Chicago police issued a warrant for Damodaran, who was finally arrested in December at her Tampa, Florida, home by Hillsborough County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office.
Advocates said Damodaran claimed the dog was her parents' and that she didn't know she was in the bin, WFLD reported.
Damodaran was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, with prosecutors saying she did not feed the dog, give it water or other necessities, and allowed it to become emaciated, WBBM reported.
She was in court last week where a judge denied the prosecutor's detention request but was ordered to stay in Illinois.
Betty has recovered and is in a new home, WFLD reported.

Hysterics At Where Owner Finds Golden Retriever Puppy Napping: 'New One'
A video showing a golden retriever's unexpected new place to take a nap has left the internet in hysterics.
Dog owner Isabelle Koch, 21, shared a hilarious video on TikTok (@belleandmurph) showing the unconventional spot where her pup, Murphy, chose to get some rest. Instead of his bed, or maybe even the couch, the 7-month-old golden retriever instead found himself a spot inside the bath tub of all places.
You might expect him to lie length ways in the bath, but that would make far too much sense. Instead, he lay across the middle of the bath, with his head tilted at a very unnatural angle.
It was certainly unusual, but Koch, of Bloomington, Indiana, told Newsweek that it "didn't surprise" her as Murphy is so goofy. Instead, she simply let the exhausted pup rest. In the video, she can be heard saying: "This is a new one" with a laugh.

In fact, Murphy stayed in the bath like that for "a solid 45 minutes" until he was thoroughly refreshed.
In the days since the clip was shared online, it has gone viral with more than 2.2 million views and 474,400 likes at the time of writing.
The caption alongside the hilarious clip jokes: "New discovery today...Bath naps."
Finding the right place for a snooze might be a challenge for some dogs, especially as they have to get so much rest each day. The website PetMD explains that most dogs spend around 50 percent of their day asleep—around 12 hours across a 24-hour period. Puppies, large breeds and senior dogs might need even more rest than that.
Even when they're not asleep, dogs have to fit in plenty of rest and relaxation throughout the day. In fact, around 30 percent of their time is spent just loafing around, meaning they're awake, but not really doing anything.
A lot can be gleaned from the position a dog chooses to sleep in too. PetMD explains that when a sleeping dog's belly is exposed, this usually means they're calm and content. Temperature and weather can also play a role, as dogs often seek out somewhere cool when it's warm and they're too hot. The bathtub could be the perfect spot for just that.
The online reaction to the adorable video has been amazing for Koch, who said it's been "only positive feedback" so far.
She told Newsweek: "Unfortunately, there's so much negativity on social media, so we want to be the positive page that brings a smile to everyone's faces. You never know how much it could brighten someone's day."
She continued: "We are so fortunate to have a community on TikTok that always allows us to share Murphy's life with them. People have been saying that it made their day, or that it doesn't surprise them with Murphy."
Since the clip of Murphy's antics went viral, social media users have lauded the pup's unconventional napping spot. Others were left filled with questions about why he chose that place to sleep.
One comment reads: "How on earth is he even comfortable lol. So cute tho."
Another person wrote: "Murph is an independent doggo who don't need no chiropractor."
"Goldens sleep in the most uncomfortable looking positions," joked another TikTok user.
While one commenter added: "How is he comfortable. My neck hurts just seeing this."
