Toledo Humane Society Family Pet Clinic Forced To Close Temporarily Amid Vet Shortage - 13abc

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - One family pet clinic in east Toledo has been forced to close temporarily because it can't find a new veterinarian. If a replacement doesn't come soon, the clinic will have to close permanently.

The Toledo Humane Society Family Pet Clinic will close it's doors on July 11, which is the last day for it's current veterinarian. The Humane Society's President & CEO, Stephen Heaven, tells 13 Action News the agency is searching nationwide, but with a vet shortage plaguing the country, it's been a challenge.

Heaven said the clinic was already understaffed, and with their only vet leaving, they have no choice but to shut down.

"It has to be a really attractive proposition or somebody really loves the mission in order for us to get somebody in here," said Heaven.

The clinic is a nonprofit with a focus on low-cost care. The job might not pay as much as other practices, but THS leaders say they hope to find someone with a passion to help animals in need.

The Humane Society's mission is to help shelter animals, animals that were abandoned, animals that are subject of cruelty, etc. The clinic serves thousands of pets in the area, and with the closure looming, some families are looking for backup options.

One dog owner, Jane Huth, said she set up an initial visit with another vet in the area, just in case. Huth said she loves the care this clinic provides her dog, Cricket, and is sad it's closing. Some patients have even requested their pets' medical records in case they need to transfer to another vet in the area.

Heaven says he believes the closure will have a significant impact on the community.

"The reason we set up the clinic in this area is because of the need," said Heaven. "All the clinics in the area are closed or moved out."

The clinics staff and patients hope the closure won't be permanent.
