530. NEW TONIGHT, A NEW HOME FOR THE PENGUINS AT THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY ZOO. YES, THIS IS THE FIRST UPGRADE SINCE THE PENGUINS CAME TO THE ZOO IN THE 1980S. AS 12 NEWS, ZOE HENRY REPORTS, THE POPULAR ATTRACTION IS BIGGER THAN EVER. THREE TWO, ONE. YAY! WALKING THROUGH THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY ZOO ENTRANCE, A NEW WINDOW INTO THE WORLD OF THE HUMBOLDT PENGUINS AWAITS. THERE'S A LOT OF STARS. WE SAW FISH, SO AS SOON AS SEEN THE MOVIE, I SEE A LOT OF STARFISH AROUND. SO I THINK IT'S LIKE FINDING NEMO. THE NEWLY RENOVATED HABITAT IS TRIPLE THE SIZE OF THE ORIGINAL. BUILT IN THE 1980S. IT'S A $5 MILLION PROJECT THAT STARTED IN MARCH. A LONG TIME COMING FOR THIS PROJECT. IT WAS IT WAS, YOU KNOW, STATE OF THE ART BACK IN THE 80S. BUT AS ANIMAL CARE HAS IMPROVED OVER THE YEARS, OUR SYSTEMS WERE LACKING. IT NOW FEATURES A WATERFALL, BETTER COOLING AND FILTRATION SYSTEMS FOR THE TANK, WHICH ALLOWS THE BIRDS TO STAY OUT LONGER IN THE SUMMER. AND NEW FOR THE PEOPLE COMING TO SEE THE PENGUINS AND UNDERWATER. VIEW A NOSE TO BEAK EXPERIENCE. LOOKS LIKE A 3-D. AND THE ZOO'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SAYS THIS UPGRADE WILL ELEVATE THE ENTIRE ZOO. WE WANT TO POSITION THE ZOO TO BE A MAJOR TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR THE STATE OF WISCONSIN AND FOR THE COMMUNITY OF MILWAUKEE. New animals are now on display at the Milwaukee County Zoo's Aquatic & Reptile Center.A giant Pacific octopus named "Flurry" is about 1 year old and came to the zoo in mid-December. She is normally reddish-brown but can change colors for camouflage.The zoo has also welcomed two frilled dragons named "Baby Frank" and "Trogdor." They arrived at the zoo in late 2023, but were kept behind the scenes until they grew big enough for public display. When threatened, they can extend a large round frill around their necks to look more intimidating. The zoo also has a blue-tongued skink for the first time since the 1980s. The 5-year-old female does not have a name yet. The skink and the frilled dragons share a new habitat of animals native to Indonesia and Australia.
